but if Jesus did not come as christians understand it I would go to hell as a punishment for my sins.

Our punishment was to go to hell forever so how come Christ only suffered a number of hours? Because He is God can you say can He suffer for a number of hours as if it is all eternity...? But that might not make much sense to me..
