I think they inflict pain on themselves because they believe without speedy punishment they will continue on in their sin ... its not used to justify yourself in Gods sight.. only blood of Christ can justify you.

I think we have orthodox saints who also inflicted pain on themselves for penitence.. I forget their names.. but they are famous... maybe one is St Shenouda with the cross.
